Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have a retail store?
No, at this time we only have a production location with the exception that you can find us selling our Mae Mae’s Candles and Mendles on most Sundays during market season at the City Market downtown Kansas City. http://kc-citymarket.com/
What is your privacy policy?
We will not sell or trade your personal information, ever.
Why soy wax?
Soy wax is a 100% vegetable by-product of soy beans. Soy beans are a renewable natural resource, the use of which helps to improve our environment and the lives of the farmers who grow the soy beans. Unlike paraffin wax, soy requires no petroleum, thus reducing US dependency on foreign oil!
Environmentally friendly, soy candles are clean burning, producing minimal soot and carbon dioxide. Lower soot levels help maintain pure air quality and reduce home maintenance issues associated with soot deposits. Soy candles last 50% longer than traditional paraffin candles, and distribute scent more easily throughout your home.
We are proud to use primarily Cargill NatureWax®. Candles made with soy waxes burn slower and last longer than paraffin, giving our consumers more value for their candle dollars. (top)
Do your candles have lead-free wicks?
We will never use lead core wicks in any of our candles. The information about lead core wicks can be confusing, but we would like to believe that the Consumer Products Safety Commission has recently worked toward banning the use of leaded wicks for a good reason. The health of our customers is a primary concern. (top)
My candle changed color when I left it on the window sill. Is this normal?
Candles will discolor or fade when they are exposed to intense light for extended periods. We do not recommend displaying your candles for long periods in direct sunlight, fluorescent lighting or other strong illumination. Store your candles in a cool, dry place. (top)
Can my empty candle jars be sent back to you for a refill?
Unfortunately, glass weakens as it accumulates bumps and scratches from use. To promote safety, we do not recommend refilling our jars for re-use as a candle. However, they make terrific containers for all kinds of things around your home, whatever small collections you may want to display. Additionally, most local recycling agencies should accept our clear glass jars. (top)
My wicks have “mushroom” looking tops. What’s wrong with them?
“Mushrooming” occurs when the candle is consuming wax more quickly than the flame can burn completely causing carbon deposits to develop. Generally, this occurs when the wick needs to be trimmed. Blow out the flame, trim off the wick and carbon deposit, then relight your candle. Never allow the wick trimmings or other materials to fall into the wax pool. (top)
Is there a good way to get wax out of fabric?
First, you should always consult the laundering instructions provided by the manufacturer of the fabric. Professional cleaners are also a good choice. If attempting to clean the item yourself, it is important to allow the wax to completely harden. Once hard, gently chip away the larger pieces of wax from the fabric. Then, an iron is the solution for removing the remaining wax from the fabric. Place newspaper or paper towels on both sides of the fabric (or on top of the carpet). Use a medium-hot iron to heat the wax OVER the newspaper or paper towels, using those items to blot up the wax once it melts. Repeat the process as needed. Once the majority of the soy wax is removed, apply laundry soap to the fabric and wash as usual. Note that you don't want to use a hair dryer or iron on anything flammable. (top)
I burned my candle like the instructions said, but it still left a ring of wax around the inside of the container. What happened?
Candles are affected by any drafts in the surroundings. Drafts cause the flame to burn toward one side of the jar. Try rotating your jar each time you burn it to help ensure even burning. It is also important to allow your candle to achieve a memory burn each time you light it. This means allowing the candle to burn long enough to achieve a melted pool across the top of the candle. We do not recommend letting your candle burn for longer than 4 hours at a time. If you do end up with unburned soy wax in your jar, never fear. There are still ways that you can enjoy the scent of your candle. We suggest using a jar candle warmer, which will melt the wax without the need for flame and still throw a great scent through your room. (top)
How do I clean out a used candle jar?
Once all wax is removed, pour in just enough rubbing alcohol to cover the base and allow the jar to sit for a few days. The rubbing alcohol should soften the glue and release the base. It is important that you allow the rubbing alcohol time to work and that you don't pry at the base with your hand or any object, so that you do not risk breaking the glass. The jar can then be washed in hot soapy water. (top)
